Horror Women Fridays - Maila Nurmi
Maila Nurmi is an American actress who was best known for her role as “Vampira.” Vampira was based on the character “Morticia Addams” from the Addams Family. In fact she was dressed up as Morticia for a masquerade party at a party in LA and that’s how she was discovered, because she won the costume contest with her Morticia. Her character became a guest on many different television shows in the Los Angeles Area, and even had a couple parts in films. She was also the star of her own show briefly. There isn’t much to find online to watch the show but you can find some old youtube clips from certain movies and introductions to other movies that she did, either way the clips you can find of her really capture her beauty and essence. But her as the goth scream queen became a huge craze at the time and ultimately became a cult classic. She wasn't just beautiful but she had a comedic act and was really funny! It’s almost a shame that you can’t find more to watch because I would watch anything with her in it 100%. She definitely was one of the original scream queens and inspiration for other roles years later.
It’s easy to understand why I would love Vampira. She is absolutely gorgeous and just signifies everything that is spooky and sexy. Her cinched waist, the exaggerated makeup and nails are amazing. I have her picture over my bedside table and I look at it every day before I go to bed. She has inspired women everywhere and today for International Women’s Day I want to dedicate a tiny little post and my first post of my favourite actresses in Horror because I always feel they are underrated and under appreciated as some of the best actresses out there. I will be posting the actresses, their work, photos and why I love them. I also hope I can turn someone on to some good movies, only if you like horror because I understand not everyone does and it definitely take a certain person to absolutely be a die hard horror fan (myself).
